ARTIST STATEMENT
My work begins with my black and white photographs.
It grows out of a need to personalize and elaborate further on these initial images, collaging on them, painting on them, and using aluminum as the ground. The aluminum reflects the surroundings back to the picture, as well as providing another surface that can be worked with paint, engraving and sanding. Emotional interactions between figures and their environment both utilize and transform the work, using photographs beyond being a purveyor of “truth” into a question of personal meaning.
My work speaks metaphorically to the elemental forces that play not only in metaphors for the spirit, but in the world of physics as well.
I began my work as a painter and now find myself drawn back to it as part of my current practice.
